Coolah Tops Bird Life

The Coolah Tops area,32kms north-east of Coolah by bitumen and gravel road, has been popular with bird watchers and bird lovers for a number of years.

Many  visitors have spent a leisurely hour watching the eagle hawks glide along the valleys and soar over the cliffs. The area has even attracted birdwatchers from overseas.

One hundred and twenty nine species of birds have been recorded. There are primarily
forests and woodland birds such as the little Lorikeet, Tawny Frogmouth Owl, Cicada bird, Eastern Yellow Robin, and the White-eared Honeyeater.

A variety of water birds such as the Little Grebe, White-Necked Heron and the Strawberry Necked Ibis are found in the wetland areas.
Birds of prey include the Brown Goshawk and the Peregrine Falcon.

Populations of several generalist forest species such as the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Crimson Rosella, Striated Pardalote and the Red Wattle Bird are very high.

Bird watchers could easily spend one week in the 30km stretch of the Coolah Tops
observing the bird life. There are four established camping areas in the Park,
This checklist combines several known avifauna surveys undertaken in Coolah Tops
National Park.

The surveys include those completed by Tamworth National Parks
Association, State Forests of NSW, University of New England and National Parks and
Wildlife Service.
